Crafting precise, culturally relevant prompts is the cornerstone of harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for mental health practice in sub-Saharan Africa. Effective prompts enable professionals to generate tailored therapy plans, client education materials, and research insights that resonate with the region’s diverse populations, from urban Lagos to rural South Sudan. This chapter introduces the SCHOLAR framework: Subject, Context, Hypothesis, Objectives, Level, Audience, Requirements to guide mental health professionals in creating impactful AI prompts. By mastering advanced prompting, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, and community advocates can address Africa’s unique mental health challenges, such as trauma, stigma, and resource scarcity, while embedding cultural values like ubuntu. This chapter provides role-specific strategies, good and bad prompt examples, and novel approaches to ensure AI enhances client-cantered care across the continent.

The SCHOLAR Framework for Mental Health

The SCHOLAR framework, adapted for African mental health practice, ensures prompts are precise, actionable, and culturally sensitive:

Subject: Specify the mental health topic (e.g., depression, PTSD, stigma reduction).

Context: Include regional details (e.g., rural Uganda, urban Nairobi, local cultural practices).

Hypothesis: State the assumed need or problem (e.g., addressing stigma in HIV-affected communities).

Objectives: Define the desired outcome (e.g., a therapy plan, community campaign).

Level: Indicate complexity (e.g., beginner-friendly for new counsellors, advanced for research).

Audience: Identify the target group (e.g., clients, families, community leaders).

Requirements: Include constraints or standards (e.g., WHO guidelines, local language, low-resource setting).

For example, a well-crafted prompt might be: I’m a counsellor in Lagos. Create a trauma-informed group therapy plan in Yoruba for survivors of gender-based violence, addressing local stigma, using low-cost materials, and aligned with WHO guidelines. This prompt is specific, culturally relevant, and actionable, ensuring AI delivers practical outputs.
